Passion and perseverance are more important to your success than talent or intelligence. And actually, pure grit may turn out to be the best predictor of future success yet.

In a series of studies at the University of Pennsylvania, researchers found that "gritty" people are more likely to achieve success in school, work and other pursuits - perhaps because their passion and commitment help them endure setbacks.

In other words, it’s not just talent and intelligence that lead to success, but also one's character.

How Much Does Talent Count?
So... if effort is the bedrock of success, what roles do intelligence and talent play? Many large research projects tell us that intelligence accounts for only about 25 percent of one’s success. Persistence, or pure grit, accounts for at least 50 percent, and creativity an estimated 25 percent.

Neurobiologist Angela Duckworth and positive psychologist Seligman, best known for his groundbreaking work on optimism, interviewed high achievers in various fields to identify their common distinguishing characteristics.

Turn Down That Radio

New research suggests that years of repeated exposure to loud noise increases the risk of developing a non-cancerous tumor shown to cause hearing loss. "It doesn't matter if the noise comes from years of on-the-job exposure or from a source that isn't job-related," said the lead researcher.

In the study people who were repeatedly exposed to loud noise over the span of several years were found to be up to 150 percent more likely to develop this type of tumor, compared to people who weren't exposed to such noise on a regular basis.

The tumor, called acoustic neuroma, grows slowly, and symptoms typically become noticeable around age 50 or older. Of the 146 people with acoustic neuroma in this study, nearly two out of three were 50 or older.

An acoustic neuroma tumor slowly presses against the cranial nerve responsible for sensing sound and helping with balance. Symptoms include hearing loss and a constant ringing in the ears, or tinnitus.

Consider turning down your car radio or, if possible, wear ear plugs if you work in a noisy environment.
