Why Bother to Change?

Change or die! What if YOU were given that choice?

What if a trusted medical specialist told you that if you didn’t make lasting changes in the way you think and act, your life would soon end.

Could you change? Actually, medical evidence says the odds for successful change are stacked against you. But there's hope...

A few years back a group of farsighted thinkers from around the world attended a "Global Innovation Outlook" conference to propose solutions to some really big problems. They started with the crisis in health care, an industry that consumes trillions of dollars of the United States budget each year.

Everyone expected the “dream team” of health care experts to proclaim that advances in science and technology held the answer. But they instead said that the root cause of the health crisis has been the same for decades, and the medical establishment still does not know how to deal with it.

The problem?
Dr. Raphael Levey, founder of the Global Medical Forum (an annual summit meeting of leaders from every part of the health system) told the audience that 80% of the health-care budget is consumed by five purely behavioral issues. And you don't need an MD to guess what issues he  was talking about: excessive smoking, drinking, eating, and stress… and not enough exercise.

That is – people are sick because of how they choose to live their lives, not because of anything beyond their control.

But the knockout blow was delivered by Dr. Edward Miller, dean of the medical school at Johns Hopkins University. He turned the discussion to patients undergoing heart bypass surgery. Miller explained that half of bypass grafts clog up in only a few years. "If you look at after coronary-artery bypass patients two years later, 90% of them have NOT changed their lifestyle," Miller said. "Even though they know they should change, they don't."

Is Change Really Possible?
Are serious lifestyle changes really possible? One expert says yes -- Dr. Dean Ornish, professor of medicine at the University of California at San Francisco and founder of the Preventative Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California.

His low fat vegetarian diet program has been proven to reverse heart disease without surgery or drugs. But Ornish insists it is also important to consider the “psychological, emotional, and spiritual dimensions." of making such a drastic personal lifestyle change, and not just threaten patients with the danger of dying.

The Payback
In 1993 Mutual of Omaha sponsored a trial of Ornish’s program. Researchers selected 333 patients with severely clogged arteries, then helped them quit smoking and go on Ornish's diet. For a year the patients also attended twice-weekly group support sessions led by a psychologist, and took instruction in meditation, relaxation, yoga, and aerobic exercise.

Three years later, the researchers reported that 77% of the patients had stuck with their lifestyle changes -- and were able to avoid the bypass or angioplasty surgeries they would have otherwise faced.

The KEY to the Ability to Change
Researchers like Dr. Michael Merzenich, a professor at the University of California at San Francisco, say the major key to successfully making a big lifestyle change is to protect your brain's ability to learn. "Unless you work on it, brain fitness begins declining at around age 30 for men, a bit later for women,"Merzenich says. "And most people mistake just being active for continuous learning. It's not the same."

What happens if you don't choose to work at mental rejuvenation? Merzenich reminds us that people who live to 85 have a 50% chance of being senile, and the percentage increases rapidly from there. While the issue for heart patients is "change or die," the issue for everyone is "embrace change, or let your mental 'oomph' just gradually slide downhill."

Hitting resistance while pursuing a positive life change is actually very common. Why? Because your subconscious mind wants to keep you in the safety of your same old comfort zone.

Watch Your Waistline
5 Tips for Eating
Out This Father's Day

By Sean Barker, CPT
certified personal trainer

Think twice about heading to the "all you can eat" buffet this Father's Day as you may be putting your waistline at risk!

Follow these 5 simple tips to eating healthy while enjoying Dad's day out.

1. Never go to a restaurant starving! You are setting yourself up for failure right from the start. Have a quick snack before you go if at all possible. A piece of fruit, some mixed nuts, or a protein shake will help satisfy you without filling you up so you can enjoy your meal. If you are really stuck, just grab a bottle of water on the way and drink it before you arrive.

This alone will help you avoid ordering the entire menu. If your family is taking you to your favorite spot that you are familiar with and you are really hungry and in a rush, avoid looking at the menu altogether and tell the waiter what you want as soon as they come to your table. This way you won't cave in to all the gut-busting choices on the menu while you try to ignore your growling stomach.

2. Once you arrive and sit down at your table, skip the bread and alcohol. There is a reason they serve you this before your meal. It's because it has been proven in studies that bread and alcohol stimulate your appetite. The biological reason behind this is your body needs food to absorb the alcohol so you don't get alcohol poisoning.

But if you're anything like me -- you still enjoy an ice cold beer or a vintage wine -- and you really want a drink, stick to one glass of wine or one light beer without the bread and have it in place of an appetizer.

3. When looking at the menu, remember that you don't have to order something exactly as it's shown. This is your day, and you (or hopefully your family) are paying for the food, so don't be afraid to ask for certain dishes with or without certain ingredients. Even if you do opt for the carb-laden pasta, ask for whole wheat pasta to sneak in a little extra fiber and avoid the blood sugar crash of refined flour.

Always remember to ask how large the serving sizes are because most times the "single" portions these days are enough for two or more!

4. You don't have to be a nutritionist to know you should stay away from the obvious food choices that are breaded, battered, or deep fried. Trans-fats are not the new villains in this summer's new "Transformers" movie; they are deadly lab-created forms of fats that are foreign to your body's natural chemistry and wreck havoc on our hearts and our health. Also be wary of any dishes smothered and baked in creamy sauces. Just remember to ask how the dish is prepared.

5. Go for any lean protein source such as beef, chicken, pork, or fish. Nothing beats lean cuts of muscle-building meat seared over a hot flame. Pair it with any side dish like a green salad or fresh grilled veggies. Think protein and fats for your meal and avoid the processed carbs unless you are running a marathon the next day.

Take the time to relax and eat slow, have some good conversation with others, and learn to enjoy the whole dining out experience instead of just focusing on filling your gut.

And if it's a special occasion like Father's Day and you do want to treat yourself, go ahead and enjoy it and get back to your healthy habits the very next meal...

...because the stress from "food guilt" just might be worse than the food itself.

Caffeine Withdrawal?

By Julie Rosset, MA, Editor

If you missed your morning coffee and now have a throbbing headache and problems concentrating -- you can now *officially* blame it on caffeine withdrawal.

According to a recent Johns Hopkins study that reviewed over 170 years of caffeine withdrawal research -- the more caffeine consumed, the more severe withdrawal symptoms are likely to be.

But surprisingly, the study established that as little as one standard cup of coffee a day can produce caffeine addiction.

"Caffeine is the world's most commonly used stimulant, and it's cheap and readily available so people can maintain their use of caffeine quite easily," says Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins.

"The latest research demonstrates, however, that when people don't get their usual dose they can suffer a range of withdrawal symptoms. They may even feel like they have the flu with nausea and muscle pain."

The researchers claim the satisfying feelings coffee users experience from their morning coffee appear to be a simple reversal of the negative effects of caffeine withdrawal after overnight abstinence.

For those wishing to quit caffeine, the researchers recommended a simple method of gradually reducing caffeine consumption over time by substituting decaffeinated or non-caffeinated products to reduce or eliminate withdrawal symptoms.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Will this make me stop drinking my preferred caffeine-packed black and green Earl Gray Tea? Probably not. But at least tea has been shown to have great cancer-fighting natural contents, I remind myself. :-)
