A recent study proves that sleep deprivation seriously decreases brain performance. Researchers expected to find only sluggish activity in the brains of healthy young people who took a simple word test after staying awake for 35 hours. They instead found that while parts of the sleep-deprived brains churned with activity during the test, another part of the brain – the language center – actually shut down. "Sleep deprivation is bad for your brain when you are trying to do high-level thinking tasks," says Dr. J. Christian Gillin of the University of California, San Diego. "It has serious consequences on performance, and on the way your brain functions." Dr. Jim Horne, director of the sleep research laboratory at Loughborough University in England, explains that the part of the brain that is overworked when sleep-deprived is involved in updating our memory, planning, attention, sense of time, dealing with novel situations, and verbal fluency. He explains that this part of the brain recovers during the earliest stages of sleep. "Not all of our sleep is for recovery," he says. "The early part of sleep is most important for brain recovery. And just as we can eat more food than we require and drink more fluids than we require, we may also sleep more than we require.” So how much sleep do we need, and how should we get it? Click here for a surprising answer. _____________________________________________
