Get a "Gritty"
Winning Edge

Passion and perseverance are more important to success than talent or intelligence. But pure grit may be the best gauge of future success.

In a series of studies at the University of Pennsylvania, researchers found that "gritty" people are more likely to achieve success in school, work and other pursuits—perhaps because their passion and commitment help them endure setbacks. In other words, it's not just talent that matters but also character.

How Much Does Talent Count?
So... if effort is the bedrock of success, what roles do intelligence and talent play? Many large research projects suggest that intelligence accounts for about 25 percent of one’s success. While persistence, or pure grit, accounts for at least 50 percent, and creativity an additional 25 percent.

Neurobiologist Angela Duckworth and positive psychologist Dr. Martin Seligman, known for his groundbreaking work on optimism, interviewed high achievers in various fields to identify their common distinguishing characteristics.

There were a number of people in their study who were brilliant, ambitious and persevering, Duckworth reports. But there were also a lot who were not geniuses, but were really tenacious. The researchers began to refer to this tenacity as "grit"—the determination to accomplish an ambitious, long-term goal despite the inevitable obstacles.

And for those who may not be ranked as having a genius IQ, Duckworth and Seligman have an important finding: Grit has value for people at all levels of raw intelligence and ability.

In fact, their initial studies show that grit and intelligence are completely independent traits. Duckworth says regardless of your ability, it's important to be focused and able to bounce back from setbacks.

The Power of Passion
There is strong evidence that passion fuels persistence. Although extremely persistent people are usually passionate about their work, that doesn't mean that the passion always comes first.

Perseverance, notes Duckworth, can itself foster passion. Often the most fascinating aspects of an area of interest only become apparent after deep immersion, to a level where you understand it and are enlivened by it.

For others, persistence may grow from a desire to test their limits. Consider endurance athletes, for whom challenge isn't merely an obstacle to accomplishing something but often the spur to action in the first place.

Also in the Mix
Passion may be the linchpin of grit, but it's not the only element. Truly gritty people tend to set especially challenging long-term goals. Self-discipline is probably also important, and studies have shown that gritty people tend to be highly self-disciplined.

Then there's optimism, a trait that Dean Keith Simonton of the University of California at Davis finds is extremely common among high achievers. They just really believe in the end that they're going to win, and they just keep on pushing, he says.

How to Be Outstanding
in Any Situation

As a gift to you, I would like to give you something you can use today to immediately improve your life.

This technique is called anchoring. Today, anchoring is generally considered part of the body of knowledge known as NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), which has its roots in Pavlovian behavior modification. You remember Pavlov. He was the Russian scientist who, in about the year 1900, made dogs salivate by ringing a bell.

Here's how he did it: He would start by ringing a bell while letting dogs smell meat powder. They would salivate from smelling the meat powder. Eventually, he only needed to ring a bell and this alone caused the dogs to salivate. The dogs had associated the bell with hunger. The bell was an anchor for salivation. Pretty simple, huh?

Unfortunately, you are exposed to this form of conditioning every day.

Did you know that TV commercial makers use anchoring to manipulate you? TV commercials will show you a sexy person smoking to cause you to associate (anchor) sexiness with smoking. Beer commercials are notorious for showing women in bikinis so that you will associate beer with sex. Fast food commercials show happy families clogging their arteries to cause you to associate eating garbage with being happy.

This technique has been used AGAINST you countless times.

Now, I'm going to hand you the keys and let you take control of your anchoring. It is possible to apply this same basic technique to almost any problem. Smoking, overeating, nail biting, fear of public speaking, all of these conditions are treatable with NLP. On many of my hypnosis recordings, I use NLP to reinforce the positive change.

Let's take a look at how Pavlov's discovery can HELP you right now. I teach this technique to established actors who need a little boost between multi-million dollar movies. Yes, even established actors feel a little self-conscious sometimes. And they love quick powerful techniques which they can use before facing the camera.

How Positive Anchoring Works

Step 1. Think of three times in your life when you felt very powerful and in control and write them down (one sentence describing each).

Step 2. Stand alone in a room and think of the first situation. Recall it in full color with sound and anything else that could make it real to you.

Step 3. At the moment when you feel fully back in that moment, slap your left shoulder with your right hand and say, "Power!"

Step 4. Repeat steps 1-3 for each of the three memories.
Remember, you want to anchor each feeling by slapping your shoulder when you feel the memory at its MOST INTENSE moment. In NLP, this process of reinforcing the anchor is called stacking anchors.

Now that you have the anchor installed, you can "fire it off" as needed. The next time you are in a situation requiring confidence, slap your left shoulder with your right hand and say, "Power!" Just as sure as Pavlov's dogs salivated when they heard that bell, and just as sure as countless people associate smoking with sexiness, you will feel confidence surging through you because now your mind associates confidence with that slapping motion and the word "power"!

Occasionally feeling a lack of confidence is a normal part of being human. Having an effective strategy for immediately turning this into confidence is a normal part of being outstanding.

Tame Your

Here's a great way to reduce your stress to prepare to handle a challenging situation or encounter.

Scientists in Slovakia gave people either 3 grams each of two amino acids (lysine and arginine) or a placebo, and then asked them to deliver a speech.

Blood measurements of stress hormones revealed that the amino acid-fortified speakers were 50% less anxious during and after the speech compared to those who took the placebo.

So… it seems you can prepare yourself for a stressful situation by eating a cup of plain sugar-free yogurt with 2 tablespoons of non-salted mixed nuts. Yogurt is one of the best food sources of lysine, while nuts pack tons of arginine.

Because both contain alertness-inducing protein, you’re best off eating this combo before a big, stressful presentation or job interview.
