Are you aware of your own unique talents? One of my best friends is a brilliant black and white photographer. When we got together for lunch recently, my photographer friend described the way she can glance at something and instantly see, in her mind's eye, the scene as a b/w photo. She just takes in the overall scene, “frames” the best possible pictures, then automatically selects the one that will produce the finest photograph. It’s amazing to see her do this. It seems totally instantaneous and effortless. She just “sees it.” Most photographers concentrate on the technical aspects of their art: The “f stop” setting, the light, the angle of the sun, and so on. While all of this is obviously important, my friend seems to just magically “know” without analyzing. Another friend of mine down in California has an amazing musical ability. He can hear a song once, and sit down with his guitar and play it perfectly. Yet another woman I know is a truly remarkable gardener – she created a virtual paradise in what was once a chicken yard. Here's a way to program your mind so that your goals come to you effortlessly. STEP ONE: THE MAGIC OF THINKING SMALL Pick a goal which is reasonable and can be accomplished within a few months. If you want more money in your life, instead of visualizing $250,000 a year, start with a goal of increasing your income or sales by 10 percent a month. After you reach that first goal you can step up to the next goal, slowly building a better life in the process. STEP TWO: DECLARE YOUR INTENT Create your own wording. The important thing is that when you say your goal, your emotional state agrees with the goal statement. For example, the reason an affirmation such as "I am now exercising every day" doesn't work is because if you are not exercising every day, you immediately feel the lie when you say it. However, a statement which begins "I now intend..." is true (at least while you are saying it), and holds no contradiction in your emotions. STEP THREE: CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESS Act as if your goal has been reached, and FEEL the emotions you will feel when you actually reach your goal. Just bask in positive emotion for a minute or two. STEP FOUR: GET HELP FROM YOUR FUTURE SELF The "future you" who has accomplished your goal knows what steps need to be taken. From this vantage point, you can ask yourself what is the next most practical action you can take. When you get the answer, write it down and take that action at some point during the day. Taking action, no matter how small, is the fastest and surest way of convincing your subconscious mind that you're serious. STEP FIVE: BE CONSISTENT ____________________________________________
Many folks think that working hard and fast is the most efficient way to get things done. So... it may come as little surprise to learn that you remember less when you're stressed out. Yale Medical School researchers have confirmed that during stressful situations we have literally NO control over a brain enzyme called protein kinase C (PKC). And PKC affects our brain’s prefrontal cortex – the part of the brain responsible for short-term memory. The researchers claim this is likely the cause of the impulsiveness and impaired judgment that goes along with stress.
