Many research studies now point to several benefits of eating nuts – including a reduced risk of heart disease. Back when “fat-free” was the smart choice, many of us began to avoid nuts. But today nuts are getting kudos as a smart and healthy food. One six-year study showed this heart disease benefit in 31,208 study subjects. The results showed that women and men who ate nuts at least four times a week had 51% fewer heart attacks than those who ate nuts less often. This benefit could not be explained by other factors, including good overall good health habits. Scientists don’t know exactly why nuts are so healthful. One idea is that they lower blood cholesterol levels, including LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, either by displacing other, harmful foods or by lowering cholesterol directly. Keep in mind that a one-ounce serving of nuts has about 180 calories. For example, you can substitute one ounce of nuts for 180 calories worth of less-healthful foods like sugary foods or fatty snacks. You might want to try chopping up nuts and adding them to rice dishes, casseroles, salads and stir-fries, and baked goods._____________________________________________
